This was not a simple once-a-day rank check. We measured rankings across dozens of geographic points per keyword, monitored multiple distance rings from each business, and tracked movement almost every day and at different hours. Some engagement signals came from logged-in users, some from non-logged-in users, and a small number came from more established account profiles.![]()

What we found was a consistent response pattern.![]()

The response window appears to be 24 to 48 hours. Initial visible movement often shows up at T+1, peak response tends to occur around T+2, and by T+3, the signal is either being absorbed into Google’s rolling evaluation or discarded as noise. In our testing, engagements typically only counted once per device or account.![]()

We also observed what looks like an algorithmic smoothing cycle every 3 to 4 days, and that matters more than most people realize.![]()

Rankings would improve, hold for a short period, and then partially drop, even when engagement remained consistent. This happened repeatedly across industries and keywords. Our working theory is that Google expects random spikes in activity. Businesses run promotions, get mentioned in local groups, or have naturally busy weekends. The algorithm cannot treat every spike as permanent or rankings would become unstable. Instead, every few days it appears to re-evaluate competitive positioning, smooth out temporary noise, and recalculate.![]()

If your engagement survives that smoothing cycle, the improvement tends to stick. If it was only a short-term spike, the gain usually fades. That means consistency matters more than raw volume. Steady daily engagement that survives multiple re-evaluation cycles compounds over time. A burst of activity followed by silence usually gets wiped out.![]()

We also found that not all engagement signals carry the same weight.![]()

We tracked business profile clicks, website visits, website visits with stronger dwell time, direction requests, phone calls, photo views, review scrolling, and shares as separate behaviors. The clearest pattern was that high-intent signals move rankings faster. Someone requesting directions or calling from the listing appears to be worth significantly more than someone casually viewing photos. Website clicks were also consistently strong.![]()

Lower-effort signals like photo views and review scrolling still appear to contribute, but more as supporting behavior. They help the engagement profile look natural and add volume, but they do not appear to move rankings as aggressively on their own. In practice, you need both: strong intent signals and supporting activity that mirrors normal user behavior.![]()

One of the strongest findings was that website clicks were the most consistent signal across distance. They performed relatively well whether the searcher was close to the business or several miles away. That makes website engagement one of the most reliable ways to build visibility across a broader service area.![]()

Direction requests and phone calls appeared to have the strongest ranking effect farther from the business, especially in the 3+ mile range. Their effectiveness dropped at mid-range and was less meaningful very close to the location. That makes sense. Google likely expects direction requests to come from users who are not already nearby. A direction request from one mile away does not send the same signal as one from farther out.![]()

Shares showed a similar pattern. They appeared to have an outsized effect on reach and expansion zones, especially beyond the immediate area. In some cases, geographically diverse shares correlated with broader ranking radius. That said, this is a more aggressive pattern and one that should be approached carefully.![]()

We also observed that some high-intent actions can become counterproductive when they do not fit expected behavior. For example, a direction request from too far away for a neighborhood business can sometimes correlate with short-term negative movement in that zone. The signal does not match what Google expects, so it appears more likely to be discounted during re-evaluation.![]()

The practical takeaway is simple: the engagement mix should change based on the zone you are trying to improve.![]()

If a business is weak in its core zone, closer-range actions like calls and realistic direction requests may matter more. If it is weak in expansion zones, website clicks and a measured amount of broader engagement may be more useful. Running the exact same signal mix everywhere is not optimal. Dwell time also matters, especially when website clicks are part of the strategy.![]()

Another major finding: reviews alone do not hold position one.![]()

We tracked businesses with strong review profiles that were losing rankings, and businesses with fewer reviews that were climbing. The businesses holding top positions were not always the ones with the most reviews or even the best reviews. They were the ones consistently generating the level of engagement Google appears to expect for that position.![]()

There seems to be an implicit engagement threshold for each rank. If a business is sitting in position one but engagement falls below what a top-ranking listing typically receives in that category, Google appears more likely to test other businesses in that spot.![]()

In that sense, reviews set the floor, but engagement sets the ceiling. Reviews help determine how low you can fall. Clean, consistent engagement helps determine how high you can reach and hold.![]()

For review velocity, our data suggests that a slow, steady pace performs better than bursts. Think in terms of a small number of reviews spread out over time rather than a sudden surge. Velocity matters, but so does looking natural.![]()

We also saw a clear pattern in how businesses climb.![]()

Consistent engagement from around position 10 often produced measurable movement into the 5 to 6 range within about two weeks. Moving from 5 to 3 typically required just as much effort as moving from 10 to 5. The jump from 3 to 1 was the hardest. At that point, a business is competing against listings already generating real organic engagement at scale. That is where many campaigns stall. The signals that move a listing from page depth into contention are often not strong enough to overtake entrenched leaders long term.![]()

One of the more overlooked patterns we observed involved demographic alignment.![]()

Google has access to broad geographic and behavioral data. It understands a great deal about how people search and interact across different service areas. When a listing’s engagement pattern does not align with the expected local behavior profile, whether by timing, device patterns, geographic spread, or other usage signals, it may be more likely to be filtered or discounted during re-evaluation.![]()

In our view, matching engagement behavior to the real service-area pattern is not optional. It is one of the differences between signals that survive smoothing and signals that get treated as inorganic. The businesses that sustain gains tend to generate engagement that looks indistinguishable from normal user behavior in timing, frequency, and geographic spread.![]()

Across more than 5,000 sessions, we also saw that different industries responded differently to different engagement patterns.![]()

In healthcare, competitive keywords climbed significantly, with several moving from low visibility into top grid positions. The biggest drivers were profile engagement, website visits, and direction requests. Once the business began generating consistent intent-based activity, rankings improved sharply.![]()

In medical aesthetics, primary keywords moved from lower visibility into much stronger positions, and specialty terms improved as well. In that category, a smaller number of high-intent signals outperformed a larger number of low-effort actions.![]()

In beauty, especially in more competitive metro areas, “near me” terms improved noticeably. One standout pattern was that geographically diverse engagement appeared to correlate with the listing showing farther from the business location.![]()

For businesses already performing well, less was often more. In cases where a listing was already in the top three, light engagement sometimes maintained or even improved rankings better than overdoing it. Once a business has a dominant profile, excessive manipulation appears to add more risk than value.![]()

In retail, we observed strong grid visibility across branded and category terms when engagement remained balanced and consistent over time. Once that presence was established, activity could often be reduced while maintaining strong positioning. This suggests the algorithm builds trust around listings that demonstrate reliable behavior over time.![]()

In hyper-competitive urban service markets, results were more mixed. Some keywords improved significantly, while others stayed flat or dipped. In those environments, engagement signals alone were often not enough to overcome competitors with real-world customer activity and stronger organic demand. In our view, local visibility at the highest level requires both a strong engagement foundation and real business activity.![]()

One of the most important things we observed is that the system does not always appear punitive. Rather than issuing obvious penalties, Google seems more likely to simply stop counting signals that do not pass pattern validation. Rankings then drift back down during the next smoothing cycle. Most businesses never realize why the gains disappeared.![]()
